What is HDCP?

Copy/content protection has been around for a long time, and in the early days, it was something that kept you from copying commercial VHS tapes. The latest technology is called High Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection (HDCP) and is used to connect HDMI to digital devices such as Blue-ray players, cable boxes, and Roku players. It is also used when viewing Hollywood content on an external monitor connected to a computer. A newer version of the copy protection technology HDCP 2.2 is required to play 4K Ultra HD (UHD) or HDR content on these devices. I get an “HDCP not authorized.  This is usually due to a communication failure between the device and the TV. Usually, the problem is with the TV’s HDMI port. What is causing the “Unauthorized HDCP Error? Content is Disabled” on Roku? :

HDMI cable:

In some cases, the problem could be due to a fault in the HDMI connection between the player and TV. Over time, a particular port on the TV may become damaged and not work with some connections, or the cable may not work due to increased performance. HDMI switch: Many people use a device called an “HDMI switch” that allows them to move the player and TV closer to the router. However, this “HDMI Switch” board is probably defective and this could be the reason for this error.

HDCP Support: In some cases the TV you are trying to connect to does not support the HDCP transmission model and an HDCP error may occur. If you want to play content on it with a Roku player, it is very important that your TV supports it. Please refer to the manual of your TV set to ensure that this function is supported by default on the TV set. Unsupported display type: The settings of the screen you want to stream may not be supported by the TV and this error may be enabled. All televisions have their maximum supported resolution and also have the maximum refresh rate. If this limit is set by the Roku player, an error may occur due to a lack of support. Important Note: It is best to swap the HDMI cable connecting to the TV first to make sure it works properly.

Solution 1:

Change the HDMI ports

The most common reason for this error is that a certain port is empty and changing the port you use to connect the player to the TV will solve the problem. This can be because a certain port becomes error-prone over time and temporarily stops working. In this case, you can always change the ports you want to stream.

 Solution 2:

 Change the display type

The screen mode used by the Roku player may not be supported by the TV due to an error. If the mode is over the TV capacity, the playback will not continue, but by changing the mode configuration we can start playback. Therefore:

Check if the problem persists. What to do if it says “HDCP error detected” on your Roku player?

If you see an “HDCP Error Detected” message or a purple screen when specifically trying to play 4K UHD or HDR content on your Roku player, follow these instructions and requirements:

Disconnect each end of the HDMI cable on the Roku player and the TV, AVR, or audiotape. Turn off the TV, AVR, or speakers and unplug the power cord. Reconnect the two ends of the HDMI cable and make sure each port is securely connected. Connect the power cord to the TV, AVR, or Roku speaker and player and wait for both devices to turn on (you may also need to press the TV’s power button or the speaker remote). Display content again. If the problem persists after following the instructions above, try the suggestions below.

Try a different HDMI input on your TV, AVR, or amplifier. Try a different HDMI cable (less than six feet if available) to make sure the cable you are currently using is free. If you’re using an HDMI, AVR, or soundbar switch, try connecting your Roku player directly to your TV.

Note:

Not all HDMI adapters support HDCP. For more information about checking your device, see the online documentation or contact the manufacturer. If possible, try another TV that supports HDCP. If you are using a computer monitor, try to use a TV that supports HDCP if possible. Try different display settings on your Roku player. You can find these settings under Settings> Display type. If you see an “HDCP error detected” message or a purple screen for the first time since starting your Roku player, please check that your TV and/or AVR or audio band supports HDCP. Content is disabled” on a purple screen, the most likely problem with the purple screen is a loose HDMI connection or a defective HDMI cable.

Try also the following steps to fix HDCP: Unauthorized Content:

 

  1. Disconnect the two ends of the HDMI connectors on both the Roku player and the television or receiver. Unplug the Roku TV and player for 30 seconds.
  2. Reconnect the two ends of the HDMI cable and press firmly all the way.
  3. Connect your Roku TV and player.
  4. Try to watch the movie again.
